Demoscene tribute - Tran

This note is easier, because Tran has his own Wikipedia entry. I still consider him to be one of the most hardcore PC coders. My friends had a chance to meet him at Mekka/Symposium copy-party, and he actually visited Poland afterwards (he was travelling the world at that time and he had Polish roots). It felt a little weird, as he actually was one of my scene idols in times when I was only starting. Turned out to be a cool guy as well. Small (and incomplete) list of his productions:

  • multiple protected mode DOS extenders, including famous PMODE/W (written together with his groupmate from Renaissance - Charles “Daredevil” Scheffold), which basically was equivalent of commercial DOS4/GW, only 100x smaller and free.

  • 669 module format and one of the first PC trackers - Composer 669,

  • demos like Amnesia (one of the first full 3D vector scenes), Hell, Timeless, Ambience (this one used some crazy video mode with 100Hz refresh rate) and Luminati,

  • games, with Zone 66 and Xixit being most famous. He was also one of the members of the original Prey team.

After he left Prey team, he became one of the lead developers of PayPal (yeah, that Paypal). What happened next? Well, read comments for this note :P (no, really, click it, it’s the most interesting thing here even if most likely not true).

While he became famous for 669, don’t forget 670. That was his 8-channel digital and 9-channel FM tracker that was used in Amnesia and one or two other productions. It was never formally released, but it’s around in a few places. Scream Tracker 3 could do that as well, but 670 was developed earlier.
